The Classic Wikipedia concept of User Levels was split into two new concepts: User Rank and Special Roles. The term "user level" is now a much simpler part of the user rank system.

User Rank

In the post-2009 (so-called Beta) version of Wikimapia, the site has 11 user levels enumerated as low as -2 and and high as 8. The negative user levels are for limited and banned users. The positive levels are for what used to be referred to as a contribution level. As a user make more constructive contributions to the WikiMapia project, they accumulate experience points. Users with a higher user level have access for more tools on their "profile" tabset. User rank is just an ordinal ranking based on experience points with the top earn rank #1, second #2, etc. A user has some limitation for the first four days after registering and starts with 0 experience points at level 1. A user automatically reaches level 2 when they have accumulated 5000 experience points. For user level 8, one must have 5000000 experience points. As of 2012, there are about 30 users at this level.

The notion of user level simply defines a series of "levels" of experience points that attempt to simplify the ranking of users based on experience points. Once an account reaches a threshold level of experience points, the account advanced to the next user level. The user levels and threshold levels are:

User level Experience point threshold
1 0
2 5000
3 15000
4 50000
5 150000
6 500000
7 1500000
8 5000000

After earning 5000 points, the user can use the following tools and informational pages:

Special roles

There are special roles for experienced and trustworthy users. Special roles include

  • Advanced User
  • Forum Moderator
  • Categories Moderator
  • Wikimapia team

The most common two levels within these special roles is determined by the role of advanced user, with other users being known simply as ordinary users. Advanced users can perform privileged actions such as deleting places and semi-protecting places. These two ideas of ordinary user and advanced user were previously known as user level 1 (UL1) and user level 2 (UL2). In the "special roles" system, for the typical user in the first few months at WikiMapia, there are 3 basic user levels:

  • Unregistered and newly registered users - can perform simple functions like add/edit place, add photos. Subject to some restrictions to avoid vandalism. Previously known as User Level 0 or UL0.
  • Registered ordinary users - can access almost all available functions. A user reaches this level after their account is four days old. Previously known as User Level 1 or UL1.
  • Advanced Users - can access all functions and have some administrative privileges (protecting articles, etc.). See also Privileged User. Previously known as User Level 2 or UL2.

As of 2014, there are about 630 users with the advanced user special role. They were inducted into this role previously using the Forum as a discussion board to help decide on new candidates. The induction process is now based on voting by advanced users that occurs when a user reaches any new level 5+.

There are six forum moderators, Martin67, RK77 detgfrsh, wgsj, AndyVolykhov, Oliver555. See User Guide: Categories. There are twenty category moderators ArnoutSteenhoek, AinarsM, AndyVolykhov, bio2935c, CGondim, detgfrsh, GILLIES, Ident, jatayu, kavaliltt, Martin67, Oliver555, Pica, Profcard, RK77, Teresa, tonye100, wgsj, wtest_wt, ZacharyKent.

There are ten members of the Wikimapia Team includes three robots moving_bot, auto_bot and copyright_cleaner and the following people:

Wikimapia team username Real name

jacksav Evgeniy Saveliev (co-founder)

If you need assistance, please contact users with special roles other than the Wikimapia team members, who are usually quite busy using their administrator privileges and adding new features to the software. Note that User:Flr and User:Sannis are administrators on this Wikimapia wiki.

Determining the user level of an account

All users are listed in the "User Rank" tool (which can be reached by clicking on your own user rank in your profile) and you can just type use the search box at the top of that page to search by username. You can also find them via the forum and if you see his post in the forum, the user level is shown on the left.
