To do |
Your account is your gateway to the WikiMapia community, and registration is free! As an unregistered user you are limited in the things you can do here, whereas if you register you have the opportunity to get more privileges and be able to do more things and do things more quickly. Your account also gives you access to communicate directly with other users around the world by posting messages in the Forum or sending them private messages. This is a great opportunity to participate in discussions with people from other cultures - provided you want to discuss things with a geographical angle!
Overview
Your account/profile is also the place where you can see how many places you have created, how many you have edited, how many comments you have made. You can vote for other users: give them a good vote if you like what they have done and where you can get feedback on what others think about your own work.
You can access your profile in two ways. The quickest way is to simply click the option on the Wikimapia Menu Bar that says "Hello, [username]." The other way is to select "Wikimapia," and then "Profile."
The Profile Window
The Generic Profile Window is as follows:
Username: Your username. A high-ranking has the message "You are priviledged user" following their name.
Location: Your Location. Keep in mind that you don't have to pinpoint your exact location, but you can place the location in a "generic" spot.
Rank: How your score ranks amoung other users.
User Actions: Shows what you've done so far in Wikimapia.
Votes About User: The total number of votes (both good and bad) that you have recieved.
Votes by User: The total number of votes (both good and bad) that you have given.
There are other fields for personal information, but this is not required.
Real Name: Your real name.
Sex: Your gender.
Birthday: Your birthday. If you do decide to give your birthday, Wikimapia automatically figures out your age, and posts it on your profile.
Spoken Languages: Any languages that you speak or understand.
Something About You: This is where you can put miscellaneous information about yourself (hobbies, your interests, etc.)
ICQ / Skype / AOL IM / MSN: You can put your screen name for these instant messaging services here.
Your web page: You can put the URL of your web page here.
Avatars
Your profile is also the control point where you can add a picture (avatar), show people where you live and change your password, for example. Adding a picture is easy if you have one on your own computer or find one on the web: just go to your profile and follow the "avatar" link. Remember that your avatar acts as your representative here, so please do not use a provocative (extreme political, pornographic, etc.) picture for your avatar. Since Wikimapia is about geography the statement you make by using such a picture is not appropriate here.
Watchlists
If you want to monitor the activity (new places, changes, deletions, ...) in one or more specific areas, you can do that with the Watchlist tool, available on the right side of your profile page.
User Account Q & A
How do I mark my own location? Why should I?
In your profile there is a link called "Choose your location". Follow the steps indicated to pick and save your location, but (for your own security) it is best if you don't center the marker directly over your house, but instead place it in a more "generic" location near your house (like a park or on a major street or a public area nearby). And why should you? To give other users an idea of where you live without telling them EXACTLY where you live. They may want to ask you about something in your neighbourhood, for example. You will also be shown on the View Users layer if you have an avatar, so if you haven't yet uploaded a picture you should do that too. It takes a while for avatars to become available, however, so don't expect to see your own in the View Users layer for a few days.
It says in my profile that I created 33 places, but when I click on the number I can only count 25. What happened to the other places I created?
Did you notice that there is a NEXT>> at the bottom of the first screen, that shows you more places? But if they are really not there, then this means that 8 of your places have been deleted. Sometimes places are deleted for good reasons; see the Deleting Places section in this User Guide.
Can I see how many places I have deleted?
Yes, in your profile, under "User actions", "Deletion requests" shows the number of places you have deleted. You can click on the number to see all these places in a list.
How do I delete a message someone sent me?
You cannot delete a message, but your mailbox only holds the last 50 message to you, with the older one effectively being deleted.
How do I use the watchlists?
To add a watchlist you click the Watchlist link on your profile page and then click the background map (closing the profile page and revealing the watchlist sidebar). Click the "add" button, type a name of your choice where it says "Watchlist name", size the rectangle to cover the area you are interested in and save it. After that you can click the name you chose and it will show all recent changes in that region. "Old" changes are on a gray background, while "new" changes are on a white background. When you have finished examining the new changes you can click the "mark as viewed" button to bring the gray background all the way to the top of the list.
Is there any way I can change my user name? I hate this one!
This is not an easy task. You should really have thought about this before you registered! If you have a really really good reason, you should email the admins at wikimapia@gmail.com. They may be able to help you. Otherwise you have two options: 1) Learn to live with it, or 2) Abandon the account and start afresh with a new registration.
Someone has stolen my WikiMapia account and password. What can I do?
E-mail the admins at wikimapia@gmail.com. Ask to have your password reset. Remember that the thief may also have changed your email address, so be prepared to offer proof that you really are the original owner of the account. And be ready to apologize to anyone your Wiki-jacker has "stepped on".
I don't want to be part of WikiMapia any more. How do I delete my account?
There is no need to delete it. Just edit your personal info and put a note in the "Something about you" box, then change your password to something you won't remember and logout, or just stop visiting the site.
