This is the introduction to the WikiMapia User Guide in English. In the box on the right you will see links to the Guide's sections. Clicking on one of those will take you to that section.

[edit] A work in progress
WikiMapia is not a finished product; features are continually being added (and sometimes removed). Similarly this User Guide will always be a work in progress. Whatever is written here about the details of how WikiMapia works is likely to change over time.
[edit] What should I read?
There is a lot of information in this User Guide, but you are not expected to read it all before starting. There are, however, some sections that are perhaps more important than others to help you get off to the right start. If you can only read a little bit, I would recommend you read the three sections about Philosophy, Languages and Advice for new users, in that order. They are all easy non-technical reading. There is very little in those sections about "how to" do something, but they are nonetheless very important to help you understand why things are done as they are. After that you can try the three sections about the Main screen, Places and place tags, and Polygons to be followed by whatever topic(s) you are most interested in.
[edit] New version
As from July 3, 2009, instead of two concurrently existent versions of WikiMapia Classic and Beta only Beta version has survived.
Most of this guide was composed before the new version (fomerly Beta) came into existence. We know that some things in the new version do not work exactly the same, and many other things have been added or rearranged, so when you are using it please be aware that differences may exist and that we hope to gradually bring this guide up to date as the new version becomes more stable and free of "quirks".
[edit] New Version help (under development)
In the interim there is some basic help on the new features of the new version at Beta help.
[edit] WikiMapia attributes, major events and FireFox add-ons
- BORDERLESS - WikiMapia Anthem (MP3 file, lyrics and music score)
- First Unofficial WikiMapia World Congress2009. Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
- WikiMapper Plus add-on for the FireFox browser – dramatically enhances WikImapia functionality and facilitates tagging due to the implementation of the numerous useful polygon management and copy/paste functions.
- WikiMapia Blog
