Can I find out which place tags were most recently added?

Yes, they are here, with the most recent at the top left. If you want to find tags in a given area, click on any tag there. You will see a location tag in blue, similar to this: World / USA / Texas / Dallas Clicking on "Dallas" will show you the first page of many place tags in the area, but here the first page shows you the oldest tags. At the bottom you will see numbers like 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 next » To find the newest tags, click on the highest number.

I found some places near the north/south pole! What is going on?

That is the work of vandals, mostly. However, there are valid tags there, marking settlements and scientific stations.

Why can't I see the list of places created by a level 2 user?

This is a temporary restriction to prevent vandalism.

What are the common tag types that people have used?

If you are referring to the Tags field, under a place's Description field, then you can see a list here.

Some places say: Edited X days ago (username), but other times the username is missing. Why?

Those changes were made by an unregistered user (UL0).
