Photos
Photos are another way to describe a place, and can often show what is difficult to say with words. So if you have a photo, or can find one that is not protected by copyright, then by all means go ahead and add it. There can be up to 7 photos for each place tag, and you cannot upload the same picture for more than one place.
At present the photos in Wikimapia stand by themselves, and there is no method to associate them with notes, nor with any associated copyright information. If you wish to add notes, then the best you can do is to add a comment that describes the photo and write your notes there. Note, however, that if you are a registered user then your name will be displayed beside the photo when it is enlarged (click on it), so that makes it a little easier to associate a photo with a comment.
Copyrights: You are free to upload any photo you took yourself. If you want to contribute a photo you found on the web, however, you must first determine whether it is protected by copyright. If the website you got the photo from states that their content is copyrighted, you must gain permission to use that photo, or follow their usage guidelines. You may also want to read about the "free" images from Wikimedia Commons. And once you have uploaded a photo you grant WikiMapia license to use and distribute it according to the WikiMapia Terms of Reference.
Photos Q & A
How do I add a photo?
First you have to determine if you are free to do so (read the Copyrights paragraph above). Then select Add/manage photos in the place’s dropdown menu, and click either the "upload" or "add" button. You can either browse to the desired photo on your own computer or enter the url of a photo on the web.
Every image uploaded from your computer is stored on WikiMapia and accessible using a URL for the small thumbnail image and the large image. After adding the image, you can get it's URL by right clicking on the large image and copying it's URL. To reuse this image on other tags, simply paste the image URL into the "Enter photo URL".
What kind of photos are not allowed?
You may not add personal photos (in close up), images hurtful to someone's feelings, pictures inciting national, religious or political discord, pornographic images, pictures advertising goods or services as well as images that are not relevant to the place itself.
How do I delete a bad photo?
From the place tag's Menu, select Add/manage photos. Then put the mouse over the bad photo. A "delete button" will appear, so that you can click there to delete this bad photo.
How do I know when a photo was taken?
Sorry, but there is no way.
How can I tell which place tags contain photos?
There are no special symbols shown in the rectangle, so the only way is to open the tag and look.
Can I add a video of a place?
Not directly, but in the description you can add a link to an already existing video, at YouTube, for example, like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzrtFPA_FxE - Tour of Vatican Museum - Part I.
The youtube video's thumbnail will appear in the Description field, ready for people to watch it.
