Voting

Voting is our method of providing positive feedback to you about your contributions to WikiMapia, and for you to provide positive feedback to other users about theirs. People who make a positive contribution to WikiMapia ("describing the world" by creating useful and well-described places) are deserving of a positive vote.

Previously, it was possible to provide negative feedback but the software was updated to remove that aspect. Now, you can only "vote for" somebody, but such voting does not effect the users account in any way; it is just a public show of support. Note that the actual number of votes you collect does not mean anything per se. Having twice as many good votes as someone else does not make you twice the WikiMapian he is. So while we are a community (in the forum), social networking is not the primary reason why we are here, and collecting votes is only one indicator of your WikiMapia activities. Asking for votes or voting for someone because you hope to get a good vote in return is NOT recommended.

When you first register, voting is not enabled for your account, but after a few weeks it will become possible. This measure is intended to prevent people from registering sockpuppets and flooding the voting system. So be patient.

Voting Q & A

How do I vote for a user?

Bring up the user's profile (see above) and click on their "votes" static. You will be prompted to give a comment for your supportive vote, and you should take the opportunity to give a brief explanation of why you voted the way you did. Note that once you have voted for a user you cannot vote for them again. You can, however, withdraw your existing vote (click on "unset").

Why should I vote for a user?

If a user has created useful places, made good edits and good comments, then give them a good vote.

How can I get more votes?

First: Create places that are useful. Second: When you have done that, you need to be noticed; and the best way for that to happen is to post questions and suggestions in the forum. Just don't ask for votes! Be a useful person, and you will be rewarded.

Someone gave me a good vote. Should I do the same for her/him?

No that is not a good idea. Votes should be based on a user's contributions to WikiMapia alone. You should base your votes on content and placement of tags, comments, edits and/or contributions to forum.

Someone said I voted too frequently. Is there a limit?

No, but since votes are supposed to be based on what you think of a person's contributions to WikiMapia, which is not something you can evaluate quickly, giving many votes in quick succession means that your votes are not well considered. Anyone looking at them in the future, perhaps trying to decide whether to give you a good vote, will see that voting pattern and probably decide not to.
