About Other Users
How can I contact another user?
Find him/her in the forum, or as a highlighted link in a place tag's description or a comment. Click on the username. That will open the profile of the user you want to contact. Click on "send message to this user", type your message into the box and click the "send message" button. The message you sent will be shown above the now-empty box. That's it, you're done; so don't click the "send" button a second time. If you have previously sent a message to this user, they might be in your contacts list: open your own profile, click on "Messages", find his/her username and proceed from there.
How do I contact a user if I only know his username?
You can find a user by selecting "Rank" from your profile window, and then typing the user's name in the search box. Note that you must know the exact name, approximate names will not be found.
How do I find out where another user lives?
If they have their location set in their profile, just click on the name of the country that is shown as their "Location:" (if there is one). You will be taken to the exact location they marked. Otherwise, you need to ask them. But be ready for disappointment, as many users prefer to keep this private.
When I click on someone's profile I still see his old avatar, but when I click on his avatar I get the magnified version of an entirely different photo?
It takes a while for the avatar to be updated. When you click on a person's photo in their profile, it magnifies the picture. If the user has recently changed his avatar, you will see the newest one. You should also be aware that your own browser "remembers" the old avatar, and you can make it reload the current one by refreshing its cache. If you are using Firefox you can do this on the keyboard with the Ctrl+F5 or Ctrl+Shift+R key combinations.
How can I find out the email address linked to a user account?
You cannot. That is private. You will not find an e-mail address here. The only way is to ask the user, so send him a message (as above).
I have a disagreement with another user. What should I do?
Bring it to the forum. We will mediate a "truce" with you and the other user.
What is a sockpuppet?
From Wikipedia - "A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an Internet community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks while pretending not to, like a puppeteer manipulating a hand puppet". In Wikimapia a sockpuppet is when you have a second account.
Is it acceptable to have a sockpuppet?
For most purposes, no. There are, however, upper level users who have sockpuppets for experiments. They are useful in that respect.
