The forum is Wikimapia's discussion area, where you can read other users' questions and answers on a variety of topics, ask your own questions and join in the discussions. The people who frequent the forum are other users just like you, although the admins do occasionally contribute as well.
Sections
The forum is divided into several sections, each with its own special emphasis:
- General Talk: General discussion about WikiMapia. New users have a place to post here.
- User Behaviour and Vandalism: Discussion and complaints about users. Is someone messing with your places? Sending you unwanted mail? This is the place to report it.
- Correction Support: Correction or deletion requests of abusive or private information. Is someone sending private information? Bad language on a tag? Notify us here.
- Bug Reports: A program bug? Sticking polygons? Report it here.
- Feature Discussion and Requests: What you would like to see in WikiMapia. Things you would like to see when WikiMapia is upgraded. Requests for semi-protection can also be made here.
- Translations: Spelling and displaying, translators' talk. Translating languages. If you are competent in two or more languages, we could use your help.
Forum "Rules of the Road"
- No aggressive behaviour or flaming in the forum.
- No trashing of other peoples topics (i.e. SPAM).
- No language other than English in the forums.
- No systematic foul language (and none at all on titles).
- No double posting. If you wish to post again, and yours is the last post in the thread please use the EDIT function, instead of posting a double. (Hoping to get an edit function soon.)
- Please ensure all questions are posted in the appropriate section.
- Please read the FAQ (posted below).
Forum Frequently Asked Questions
When can I join in the forum discussions?
After you register, you have to wait 3 days before you can post in the forum (this is an anti-vandalism measure). Until then you can check whether someone has already posted your question.
Why am I not able to post into the forum?
If you still cannot post in the forum, check your votes. If you have bad votes, that may limit what you can do in the forum and WikiMapia. Please read the Voting section of this User Guide.
Should I ask a question anywhere in the forum, or should I start a new topic?
That depends on the question. You should acquaint yourself with the forum. First find the forum section (above) that seems to be most appropriate, then see if there is an existing topic that seems suitable. If not, then by all means start a new topic.
How can I make sure that someone sees my posting? Should I post it in many sections?
There are many people who regularly look in all the sections, so just pick a place. Lots of people will see it! Cross-posting in many sections will not be looked upon favorably, and your post might just get deleted.
I posted a message in the forum, but I have changed my mind. Can/should I delete it?
New users cannot delete posts. If you want a post deleted, just add a second post asking someone to delete it. This will usually do the trick, unless someone else has already responded, when a deletion would disrupt the thread continuity.
I added a photo to my profile, but my forum posting still shows "no photo"?
Have patience. It will appear soon. The photo should be displayed within 24 hours.
I remember seeing something discussed in the forum last week, but now I can't find it. Is it possible to find?
As of February 1, 2009, Wikimapia has a search function in the forum that will search for forum threads using keywords. Other possible ways to search for old forum threads are the following:
- AltaVista works well as a search engine for WikiMapia. Go to AltaVista, and in the search box insert "url:wikimapia.org/forum domain:wikimapia.org" and then your search keywords.
- Generic Search engines like Google Search, Yahoo!, and Ask.com work too.
Why do forum messages always run off the right side of my screen?
The forum is designed for a screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher. If yours is set to less than this, the forum display will be wider than your screen.
How can I make a text bold, italicize or underline it?
You will have to use square brackets [][/]
- for bold: [b]text[/b]
- to italicize: [i]text[/i]
- to underline: [u]text[/u]
