To do

Wikimapia software is updated almost every month, sometimes with new visible features added. Note: there is no need to include features that only the Wikimapia Team are aware of (such as features that turned out to be failures but where the code has not been completely removed).

A pretty-good sync-up of the Russian and English User Guides, even if that only results in this list being added to. It may involve some time and effort to create the documentation, but there is no reasonable excuse for not keeping this list up-to-date. In particular, the navigation boxes on the right of every page should have a one-to-one exact match between at least English and Russian (which they do not yet do in 2012). When that exact one-to-one match is achieved, thereafter the adding/remove of items should be done at the same time. Recognizing the importance of this latter notion by all Documentors is an important concept to establishing an efficient procedure for making such changes to the navigation box, but care should be taken to ensure that this requirement not slow down the adding of new needed pages. When the access control of the Documentor group is established, there should be a mechanism where line items communicated by non-privileged or unregistered users can be received and added to this list in a reliable and timely fashion. Perhaps a documentation email account exists such as documentation@wikimapia.org would suffice, so long as it can be relied upon to produce timely results.

We should also ask what other languages there is a demonstrable demand for. As of 2012, we only have complete-looking User Guides for English, Russian and Portuguese and the project is over 5 years old. We might do well to set a goal of just keeping those two or three in pristine, up-to-date condition and in sync.

While a lot of communication occurs on the forum, when matters are implemented in software or simply conventions of the web site, then it should be at least noted in the User Guide.

The User Guide should, moving forward from 2012, move away from lengthy FAQ lists and towards an excellent description of the software and conventions of the Wikimapia web site. It takes good writers to compose good paragraphs of text rather then just a bunch of FAQ and Forum entries that lack a organization and cohesion.

To-do list

Some features that are not yet documented in the English User Guide as of early 2012 include:

  • (2012) Watchlists - one of the "User level 1+" abilities that allows one to draw a lat/long square on the Earth and monitor all new places and updates of old places by any user. This is sometimes used to monitor the activities of other users.
  • (2012) Some of the details of place descriptions, such as special URL's like YouTube
  • Other features that are enabled when one reaches User Level 1+ (5000 Experience points) such as editing linear features.
  • (2012) A better explanation of places that have their address in the title.
  • (2012) A discussion of any current, valid UserScript tools. As of 2012, this site is mentioned on the front page of the Russian UG.
  • (2012) A complete documentation of the menu items in the menu headed by "Profile", include an appropriate explanation of the Hotel booking / booking.com feature.
  • (2012) Documentation about the notion of "approved edits"
  • (2012) Documentation about protecting places.
  • (2012) A complete description of the obscure features that are available only to those with the Advance User role.
  • (2012) Documentation of what those with the role of Category Moderator can do.
  • (2012) Some attempt should be made to document the Wikimapia robot API. There are at least three robots already called moving_bot, auto_bot and copyright_cleaner. Perhaps when users can load in data via a robot, every city can be as well documented as, say, http://wikimapia.org/1859924/Seaford-DE and http://wikimapia.org/4198346/Nuneaton without necessarily all the work being done by hand and taking five or more years.
  • (2012) Related to the moving_bot, if the user should be away of map shift issues, then it should be documented somehow.
  • (2012) How http://wikimapia.org/special_pages/guidelines/ decided to display English or Russian or whatever should be documented (it is a cookie or something). It should probably be changed to something like http://wikimapia.org/special_pages/guidelines/en/ for English so that it is URL-driven. Perhaps the Documentation Team should have access to that text so that they can improve it.
  • (2012) There are ways to making places be expunged so that they do not even show up on the "deleted places". If this is just a hack where a DBA changes the MySQL via direct SQL access, then this should be acknowledged and documented as such. If it is via a feature along the lines of the "Wikipedia oversight" or marking the outline as never to be shown, then it should be be documented as such.
  • (2012) The new "historical layer" should be well-documented. See the forum entry First approach to the "Historical Layer"
  • (2012) There are some special categories, such as the one called "historical layer / disappeared object" that should be better documented.

Software wish-list

  • Just as the Guidelines language is set with some cookie, so are languages within the Wikimapia places. That is nice, but it would also be nice if the URL format allowed a way to point to a specific language of a place.
  • It would be nice if the URL format allowed for pointed to a previous revision of a place description.
