Introduction

This project is an effort to completely map the Honolulu neighborhood of Waikiki. The goal is to make the best map possible using Wikimapia; and given that Honolulu is the origin of Wiki Wiki, we should honor Honolulu by fixing up it's most celebrated neighborhood. Let's tag every building and place in Waikiki. Join now and be a part of something special!

Volunteers Needed

Anyone may participate. Many different skills are needed. If you're only good at one or two particular skills, that's okay. Do what you do best, and leave the rest for others to do. Your help is appreciated no matter what you do, and no matter how much or how little time you can donate. In particular, the following people are needed:

  • Polygon artists - Those who can create polygons that are properly squared and with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Researchers - Those who will determine the name, address and purpose of each place. Researchers will also determine web addresses and any other useful information.
  • Writers - Those who will study the information collected about each place and write descriptions.
  • Quality Control - Those who will examine our work from an outsider's perspective and let us know what needs to be improved.
  • Local Researchers - Local residents of Honolulu would be especially welcome to participate. People who can gather and verify information locally would be a great help!

How To Help

To volunteer, add your name to this table, then sign up to handle specific tasks in the Project Status subtopic below. If you're working on this project and need help outside of your skill area, feel free to contact anyone on the list who has the appropriate skill.

How To Collaborate

Use the Waikiki thread in the forum to post questions, comments, suggestions, major progress, favorite bread recipes, reports of alien attack, or whatever.

Project Scope

Waikiki is bounded on the north by Ala Wai Canal, and on the southeast by Kapahulu Avenue. Within these bounds, we will complete all of the following:

  • Roads: Includes name, position, extent, size, direction, and type (public or private).
  • Place Tags: Includes place name, address, web site, category, description, Wikipedia link, etc. References must also be included so that all information can be verified.
  • Polygons: Clearly and accurately indicating each building or property boundary.

Roads

The road system is basically complete; but now it needs to be verified. The roads were selected and named based on the Google Maps layer. However, the information provided on this layer may not be 100% accurate. Commercial map makers are known for including minor inaccuracies in order to ensure that their work is not copied.

Tasks:

  • All of the road names need to be verified with a government source (not Google), with special attention to spelling. In particular, we need to determine if any of the road names should have a glottal stop (').
  • Need to verify the exact extent of certain smaller or unusual roads.
  • Need to verify if any of the smaller roads are not really roads, but alleys instead.
  • Need to verify if any of the roads are private. Will indicate as such if needed.
  • Need to verify if any small public roads were somehow missed.

Place Tags

The standard to be used for place tags:

  • The title should be the legal name of the building, place or business.
  • The street address is required.
  • As much of the following information is helpful: link to an official web site, Wikipedia link, category.
  • If a business resides within a building but does not occupy the entire building, the place tag should not be named after the business. Instead, a business like this can be listed as a tenant business within the building's place tag.
  • The description must not be copied from Wikipedia or any other source. It must be in your own words. A brief paragraph consisting of 2 to 5 sentences is appropriate.

Note: This standard is suggested. Feel free to discuss.

Polygons

The standard to be used for polygons:

  • The first preference is to mark each building.
  • The property boundary may be marked instead of (or in addition to) a building if it makes sense to do so. A property boundary should only be marked if we have a boundary reference.
  • Each building polygon should represent the base of the building as closely as possible, not the top of the building. This will ensure that the map layer is clear and usable. If it helps, draw the top of the building, then shift the polygon to line up with the base of the building.
  • Polygon lines must not intersect or overlap. Polygon lines should be set back from actual boundary lines by about 5-10 meters.

Note: This standard is suggested. Feel free to discuss.

Tasks:

  • We need to figure out how to handle the polygon lines for the city of Honolulu and the island of Oahu. These lines are currently proceeding carelessly through the Waikiki area.

Project Status

Use the following table to find areas to work in, to coordinate with others, and to get credit for your contributions. For most tasks, work on one city block at a time. If you're contributing in a way that isn't defined by city blocks then feel free to describe what you're doing in your own terms and add it to the table.

Feel free to jump in and help wherever something needs to be done.

Note: Blocks are usually divided by streets; however, the blocks near the ocean are divided as if the following streets are extended to the ocean: Paoa Place, Saratoga Road, Royal Hawaiian Avenue, Kaiulani Avenue, Liliuokalani Avenue, and Kapahulu Avenue.

Project Notes

  • How to tell the difference between a condominium and an apartment: Both are categorized as apartments in the zoning data. However, the tax data will show multiple owners for a condominium and only one owner for an apartment.

Useful Resources

Tax Maps

Tax maps are useful for precisely identifying boundary lines, tax map IDs (to identify type of property and the current owners), and verifying some of the road information.

Note: Waikiki is in tax map section 2-6.

Other Maps

  • Oahu Interactive Map Yet another viewer from the City & County of Honolulu Department of Planning and Permitting. Turn on the Structures & Facilities layer to see the names of many buildings. The Imagery & Relief layer is also helpful. Be warned that the viewer is slow, crash-prone, and often inaccurate.
  • Hotel Map
  • Island Aloha Map Provides names and addresses of many hotels and apartment buildings. Descriptions, unfortunately, are in Japanese.
