 Why not wikicommons photos layer too?

Hi, as I can see wikimapia added Google Panoramio layer. Good. But why not add an option to see wikicommons photos layer too?
<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Geocoding">commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Geocoding<;!-- m -->
Look an great example: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="stable.toolserver.org/wma/">stable.toolserver.org/wma/<;!-- m -->

I really would like to see it. It's opensource. And I have many suggestions if Wikimapia implement it. Any chance?
Or Wikimapia really have a relationship with Google that has no permission to add wikicommons layer?

Google Panoramio layer was a great advance... Now, we can use those pictures to confirm a place you may be in doubt before. But we have to remember we are not allowed to add those photos in our WikiMapia place tags, unfortunately... (for more information about image copyrights, see <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="www.wikimapia.org:81/forum/?t=3117">www.wikimapia.org:81/forum/?t=3117<;!-- m --> )

And, of course, if we could have another similar layer (and, specially, a Wiki one!), it would be even better.

One of the suggestions if we use wikicommons photos layer is: Wikimapia could implement a way to filter photos to be showed on map by Date, looking the exif photo information. So we could see on map for example, only photos from 2006 year or 2007 or even an specif date like: 10/05/2002

I would love to see this too! I have hundreds over images geocoded around Durham, North Carolina! It would make all the difference.

Here is another way to view the GeoCommons layer:

<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.99721327866,-78.905582875013&spn=0.01,0.01&t=k&q=toolserver.org/~para/GeoCommons/GeoCommons-simple.kml">maps.google.com/maps?ll=35.99721 ... simple.kml<!-- m -->

When I try to click on panoramio thumbs on wikimapia, is not always that show the window with the photo in a bigger size. It's irritating. I click on one: open. I click in another: nothing happens. Try again.... Nothing.
I have a lot of photos on wikicommons too. (please support wikicommons photos on wikimapia)

Another problem: Sometimes when I go to map type: Google Panoramio, none photos appear.

Idea: If we have wikicommons layer on Wikimapia we could: have an extension on mediawiki to tag (annotate) images. All places annotated will be a place on Wikimapia. So when we click on a wikicommons image thumb on wikimapia, we will see this photo a little bigger and with the annotations. If we click on the place annotated, wikimapia will go to this place on the map.
Maybe to this work will be necessary talk with wikicommons admin to accept this kind of extension on wikicommons project. An specif wikimapia extension to wikicmmons project.

What wikimapia admins... think about it

Thanks

@vIunaI: I would suggest that you code your own Wikimapia (you should give it a different name, though). We have been asking for primitive, easy to code and (mostly) not traffic intensive improvements for a long time. Most of our requests are being ignored.

Good luck. :-D

@ pirt:

Indeed, it would nice to see a system based on more open development, so that it can't get stopped up like this. And to reformulate the licenses as well, to make it truly Free/Libre.

But we would be starting the mapping from scratch... It was a lot of work!

Well, we are testing Google Panoramio layer (I love it), this definitely must be in View panel (imho).

I like the layer too, but I like the concept of the "pictured object" better than "location picture".
I see a lot of pictures in panoramio which are wrongly located and which can't be checked without having been there.

What koriakine wanted to say with: Well, we are testing Google Panoramio layer (I love it), this definitely must be in View panel (imho).

You like Panoramio and this must be in View panel? And what about wikicommons layer? you like it too and must be in view panel? or only panoramio.

Sorry for my english.

The point is not whatever I like or not. Panoramio layer is useful (even so questioned). What is for sure - we cannot put all existed layers to the main panel (what about special things - I would love to have also.. a link - "more layers..." - like in languages panel).

Understand. So wikimapia devs has no problems adding custom layers like Openstreetmap, wikicommons photos layer. You just don't want to put all layers on the main panel. What I was thinking is that maybe wikimapia had any relationship with Google that was forbidden to add any custom layer not related to google services.
But I was wrong (THAT IS GREAT)
So I hope to see this custom layers as soon as possible.

Thanks

No, nothing is forbidden, we just don't want to overload interface for common users. Google, by the way, promote Wikipedia: <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2008/10/2-lines-of-cod...">googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com ... -more.html<!-- m -->

So add a custom layers like the language menu (More languages) is the best way to not overload interface.
Thanks again.

There are thousands of layers and certainly they can't all be featured prominently in the WikiMapia interface, but the Wikimedia Commons layers is becoming the flagship Open Source counterpart to Panoramio, so perhaps it should be given serious consideration.

Looking Panoramio, I see we can't have satellite view with photos thumbs together (if yes, is not possible click on photos). I thought could be more interesting show the photos thumbs on the right panel, so when hover mouse on thumbs we see the photo location on the map by the little red circle. Something like what happens when we do a search and hover the mouse on the result to see the location of the place on the map.
I don't know if is possible to implement this with Panoramio, but what you tell me with Wikicommons layer?

(I like the layer too, but I like the concept of the "pictured object" better than "location picture".
I see a lot of pictures in panoramio which are wrongly located and which can't be checked without having been there.)

Totally Agree.

"Problem": On Google Maps service and Wikimapia, the Panoramio photos untitled doesn't appear on map. But I saw a online page map that show all panoramio photos, even the ones untitled.
Does this can be changed on Wikimapia to show all photos?
