Marsh in Barra, Opol

This wetland is beside Riverdale Grade School in Barra, Opol. It used to be a farm, just like PNR Subdivision which is about 100 meters away. It's an interesting place for bird watchers during the rainy season. When these photos were made in August 2008, there were egrets, possibly migratory, feeding on what looked like gourami fish. Kuhol snails are abundant. Native turtles might be present. Some bits of trash, unfortunately, are already visible.

Several farms in the Philippines are being converted into subdivisions, a condition that could be partly responsible for the dwindling supply of rice. A Protestant pastor said in South Korea, lowland farms remain cultivated, and subdivisions are built in the mountains instead.
