Mud Island Fort (Fort Mifflin) was the site of the largest bombardment of the Revolutionary War. The fort originally sat on an island in the river.
The current fort is a Second System fortification which was modernized under the Third System beginning in 1836.
As of 1851, it was intended to be armed with nine 32-pounder seacoast guns, twenty-eight 24-pounder guns, four 18-pounder guns, eight 8" heavy seacoast howizters and four 10" heavy mortars, for a total of 58 guns.
