Bastion Hererias Maestranza (Royal Foundry and Royal Armory)

Bastion Hererias Maestranza (Royal Foundry and Royal Armory)

Bastión Hererias Maestranza: Named after two adjacent structures: the royal foundry (Hererias) and the royal armory (Maestranza) located beside Plaza Militar.

This archaeological site is part of the foundry of the Artillera de Maestranza (armory) located near Fort Santiago. Built sometime during the 17th Century, cannons and armaments were manufactured and stored here. In 1824, the bronze statue of Carlos IV (now located in Plaza Roma) was molded and cast in this foundry.

The maestranza was closed down during the 19th Century and the building was used as an office by the American Military for the Manila Arsenal. It was destroyed during World War II.
