The most sacred mountain in the region around Lhasa (3658m), the capital of Tibet, rising directly north of the Drebung-monastery (3790m), 6 km west of Lhasa. Before His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso left Tibet in 1959 it was a traditional ceremony, that every year the Dalai Lama, riding a horse, went up to the summit in a grand procession of pilgrims to make a sacrificial offering to Buddha.
