  • The good old Buckingham Palace to the hostelites! This beautiful colonial facility was built by Sir Archie Birkmyre over half a century ago (don't remember the exact date) with the purpose of providing a base for OGBs from DGH to further their studies and professional carreers while enjoying every amenity a hostel & club could provide in a city like Kolkata. Today This facility can hardly hold it's own weight and is slowly seeing it's glorious past slipping into oblivion. It's a miracle that it still stands strong providing for a few but it could be great property with heritage value to serve generations of students from Kalimpong.
  • Dear Sir, I Robert Gardner i am an OGBs i use to reside in the hostel i have fond memories specially the two tennis courts, where i use to play. I use to enjoy the food and as we use to leave the Hostel across the road was a chai wallah or a cafe. Regards, Robert Gardner.
  • I agree with Ajit and Robert, the Birkies had seen better days.
  • I agree with all the commentators. I stayed in the hostle from 1984 to 1986 and I still remember those days. Opposite to our hostle, one English doctor used to look after the medical needs of the local rickshaw puller. I had planted few rubber plant along the road neaere the gate. During those days, Dr Graham's Bakery was prospering and one guy named 'David' (he used to live in Theater Road) was the Manager. And my favourite orderly was 'Sherali' whom was so good and polite to us. I wonder if he is still in job! I am away from India for a long period of time. This time, when I go back, I would like to stay in that hostel again for a month. Perhaps this will be my last visit and I would like to make it a memorable one.
