Mud Creek: July 16-18, 1864

After the fighting in the New Hope/Picketts Mill sector died down, Sherman gradually shifted his army eastwards towards Kennesaw. A series of sharp battles marked this period. Holding the extreme left flank of Johnston's Lost/Pine/Brushy Mountain line at this point was Cleburne's Division, Hardee's Corps (CS). Attacked by elements of XX Corps (Hooker) and XXIII Corps (Schofield) July 16-18. Brigadier Genl. Lucius Polk (nephew of Leonidas Polk) wounded here for the 4th time during the war. His uncle had been killed just a few days earlier on Pine Mountain just to the north. Johnston orders withdrawal (again) into the Kennesaw Mountain line June 18.
