Quinta da Boa Vista

Once the home of the Royal Family during the Brazilian Empire, this magnificent park was declared a National Artistic and Historical Heritage Site in 1938, It still today preserves the characteristics of the original design by French landscape designer Auguste Glaziou, and has also been declared an Environmental Conservation Unit. Its romantic gardens, complete with bridges, waterfalls and lakes, include a Temple of Apollo, complete with Corinthian columns, as well as a lookout point and a grotto. The former São Cristóvão Imperial Palace was the birth-place of Emperor Pedro II, as well as Queen Maria da Gloria of Portugal and Princess Isabel. It has also been the stage for some of the most important events in Brazilian history such as the Independence from colonial rule, the nation’s first Constitution, the Abdication, the Abolition of Slavery, and the Declaration of the Republic. It currently houses the National Museum.
