Golden Gate

Otherwise known as the "Golden Ghetto", this place used to be the dream suburbia of the early 80's. People could enjoy the great beaches that the Naples area has to offer and then go home to quaint three bedroom houses in Golden Gate. It was also a nice place to start a family, with home prices being quite affordable and an abundance of land on which to build.

The introduction of low-income housing changed all that, giving Golden Gate its new name. What were once single-family homes were instantly turned into 10-person "work houses" for the influx of illegal immigrants into the area. The once prosperous, wholesome neighborhood, turned into a veritable slum overnight.

Ever increasing home-values and the ever decreasing desirability of the neighborhood for good honest people, has left those who have owned homes with just one single recourse: to sell. Golden Gate is currently one of the more active real-estate areas in Naples, with Collier County being one of the hottest counties right now in the entire country. This ability to turn a profit has caused a new problem. Landlords of the once low-income housing apartments are now turning, and renovating them, and then selling them as condominium units. One such area is the newly formed 'condos' on 16th Place SW with 2/2 units listed at over $329,000.

Sadly, the description is true, I live here and I don't like it. But it IS still Naples, and it IS still safer than Fort Myers or Bonita Springs & Immokalee City.

The transformation of the area since the 1980's is beyond all belief. What once was a quaint, comfortable community for retirees has morphed into a depressing slum of illegal immigrants, criminals and the dregs of human society. Most of the reported (and unreported) crime in Collier County now takes place here. This is one of the saddest declines in a long list for Florida as the state is swamped (no pun intended) by seemingly never ending waves of lower class people.
