A census-designated place with a population of 1,609 at the 2000 census, based around the unincorporated town of Joanna. The town was settled in the 1760's, and became known as Martin's Depot or Martin's Mill in the 1850's after a local planter, Martin Kinard, helped bring the Laurens Railroad through the town. It was renamed Goldville in 1872 after a large tract of land purchased by the businessman James Blalock. A cotton mill developed here, and was purchased in 1924 by Harshorn Interests of New York. Upon purchase the mill was renamed the Joanna Cotton Mill after Joanna Hartshorn Black, wife of one of the investors. The mill eventually became one of the largest sources of lampshade cloth in the country. The town, reliant on the mill for most of its development thereafter, then became known as Joanna.

  • The article should read: "Upon purchase the mill was renamed the Joanna Cotton Mill after Joanna Hartshorn Hack, wife of one of the investors." The name is incorrectly stated as Joanna Hartshorn Black.
  • There is another error I did not spot earlier. The text should read "It was renamed Goldville in 1872..." The name of the town is incorrectly stated as "Goldsville." The name of the town was renamed Joanna on August 1, 1948. Presumably, the name comes from either Mrs. Hack's name or from the name of the mill. I am a life-long resident of Joanna and remember when it was named Goldville.
