The tradition of Aggie Bonfire dates back to 1909. It was built by students and burned the night before the annual football game against the University of Texas. Bonfire reached a maximum height of 109 feet, 10 inches. Bonfire collapsed on November 18, 1999, killing twelve students and injuring at least 27 others. A memorial was constructed on the site and was commemorated in 2004.
