  • It is o.k. Very useful to youngsters, about the historical background. Sent by: Mr R.Namasivayam, Retd. Chief Editor, Govt of India, a native of Vallanad and now settled at Nagpur, Maharashtra.
  • In the approved names title, " 5-Veettu Pillai Valavu" is not to be linked with Srivaikuntam. If possible, under the approved places it should read"Vallanad 5-Veettu Pillai Valavu'. This above Valavu(mini complex or small cluster of houses in Tamil)is the expression used in Vallanad and its neighbourhood villages to refer to the inhabitants of this area . They are all Saiva Pillais, whatever the term is worth in understanding the nuances of social strata. As somebody has earlier apprised adequately, these families are descendants and kin of Thanathi Pillai(Revenue Head) of the erstwhile Maniachchi Zamindar. The said Thanathi Pillai lived in Vallanad to carry out his revenue responsibilities. He was ably assisted by valiant men from "Nadu Valavu", among them was the legendary Velliath Thevar (Kattpomman"s Commandant). This is a piece from history of Vallanad during about 200 years from 1700 to 1900. With the ascendancy of expanded British Rule, the Zamindari pattern yielded to Brjitish as in other parts of the country even prior to Independence. Younger generation will be proud to know the historic significance. (Sent by R.Sivagnanam, also a native of Vallanad) .
  • As one from this group of family now living in Mumbai, pleased to view and the comments. Thanks wikimapia.
  • Some additional bytes. These Pillaimars are Saivam. They hail from Thanjavur, where their ancestors were Ministers under Thanjavoor King .This kingdom over the years faced instability. Consequently, these Pillai families had to find newer avenues. Thus, two brothers from this group moved southward carrying King's good words . The elder brother Sivasubramania Pillai was received by Kattapomman as his Thanathi Pillai. Rest is history. The younger Theerthappa Pillai served as Thanathi Pillai of Maniachchi Zamindar at Vallanad. His descendants are these '5-Veettu Pillaimar' of Valland. There is no historical documentation. But anectodal evidences are shared over generations down the line at Vallanad.
