Namesake vessel of her 2-member class, the USS Pigeon was one of the first US Navy Vessels to utilize the SWATH design in her hull which provided a stabilizing effect during salvage operations. Her hull styles have been repeated on numerous US Navy vessels, notably the Victorious Class and the newest class of Littoral Combat Vessels.
She served from 1973 until 1992 when she was decomissioned and placed in the Suisun Bay reserve fleet. In 2002, she was reactivated on a non-mobile basis to serve as a training platform for future submarine rescue sailors, a role in which she currently serves based out of San Diego Naval Station.
