Unable to stop, the train shot past a red light, and was sent into a bay platform at Chester General where an empty DMU was being stabled. The driver escaped before it collided with the train.
The freight train was destroyed and the fuel tanks burst, sending ignited petrol in several directions. The first coach of the diesel train was completely destroyed, the second was sent flying onto the platform where in knocked down a building on the platform. Part of the roof was destroyed, and was removed (but never replaced, though the renovation project will in the future). Both trains were written off.
