Mount Baker

Mt. Baker (10,778 ft/3285 m)
is an active strato-volcano belonging to the Pacific Ring of fire
and residing in the North Cascades.

Last recorded eruption was in 1880.

This is a huge recreational area for people in the Pacific Northwest year round for hiking, snowboarding and skiing.
It is visible as far away as the Fraser Valley/Abbotsford region over the border in British Columbia.

  • In 1975 Mt. Baker gave local residents a scare with increased steam activity and a few mudflows down its eastern flank. Baker has remained on a "high simmer" ever since. I have seen Baker's activity for myself when I climbed it in July 2006. Sherman Crater (just below Baker's true summit, between Grant and Sherman Peaks) ranks second to St. Helens as the most active volcano crater in the Cascades. This mountain is ALIVE, people.
