A caldera formed by the great volcanic eruption of Mt. Mazama about 6,850 years ago. Roughly 50 cubic km (12 cubic miles) of magma was spewed out in this eruption, which was the largest in the Cascades within the last 10,000 years. The last eruption involved underwater domes in the lake about 4,300 years ago. At 1,932 feet (589 metres), Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States.
