Independence Square / Maidan Nezalezhnosti
Previously known as Kreshchatik, Duma, Soviet, Kalinin and October Revolution Squares.
Originally formed by the Pechersk gates of ancient Kiev, it was rebuilt several times throughout history, particulary post-war (WWII), where it became the central feature of Alexander Dobrovolsky's project, thereby becoming one of the famous landmarks of Stalinist Architecture.

Площадь Независимости - центральная площадь Киева.
На украинском языке - Майдан Незалежності. До конца Х ст. эта местность, как и весь Крещатик, носила название Перевисеще и представляла собой лесные чащи. Там где теперь начинается улица Софиевская, была Лядська брама, которая вела к верхнему городу. В конце XVIII ст. - в начале XIX ст. Майдан представлял собой пустырь - так называемое Козье болото. На территории площади в XVIII ст. были построены каменные крепостные стены, так называемые Лядские ворота, которые существовали до 1833 г..
