Zapote Bridge Battlesite:
The 1st Battle of Zapote Bridge was fought on February 16, 1897. It was one of the turning points of the Philippine Revolution of 1896. The clash proved to be the signal event that turned the tide against Filipino revolutionaries, but it was one also of the epic battles of the Revolution when Filipino gallantry and heroism, demonstrated by the Belgium Academy of War-educated Gen. Edilberto Evangelista, shone its brightest in the face of superior Spanish forces. Evangelista, the first & only Filipino War Engineer, fought the Spanish Marines by utilizing the "Trench Warfare" a defensive strategy that would be widely employed in Europe in World War I, 20 years after this battle.

It was in this battle that earned the respect of General Henry Ware Lawton, whose dispatches invariably carried a sympathetic note of the heroism displayed by Filipinos fighting for their freedom.
