Itsukushima Island

Miyajima Island.
Noteworthy for the vermillion shrine and torii gate that appear to float on the water (at least when the tide is in); one of the most beautiful sights in Japan. There are a number of other historic buildings. A hike and ropeway (aerial cable cars) reach to the top of Mt. Misen with a great view of the many islands of the Inland Sea. The sights can be seen in a daytrip from Hiroshima, but an overnight stay is said to be memorable.
