Krnov

Krnov is one of important economic, cultural, and social centres of Czech Silesia. The town was born in the l3th century where merchant routes had crossed two rivers and people had lived since the late Stone Age. Krnov had been the seat of the Earls of Krnov since 1377. It has suffered many times from fights and wars that swept the country incurring damage or completely destroying much of the material culture. The l9th century brought the textile, engineering and foodstuffs industries to Krnov. Local organ production has acquired international reputation. There are good roads and railway connections to Olomouc, Ostrava, Opava, and Jeseník and a border crossing to Poland. Krnov is situated at an altitude of 315 m where the outermost foothills of the Lower Ash Moun tains (Nízký Jeseník) end and the Silesian Lowlands opens toward the north. The town is an attractive base with good facilities for lovers of the unspoiled nature of the Ash Mountains, with destinations like the spa at Karlova Studánka, Jeseník, or Lipová; for trips to the Osoblažsko region or to the Polish towns and lakes near Otmuchov, Nisa, and Opole. If you like to browse in the secrets of history you will like Krnov's centre with burgher houses, a mansion, arcades, the Gothic concert hall and a couple of baroque churches.
