Washington D.C.

Washington, D.C., is the capital city of the United States of America. "D.C." is an abbreviation for the District of Columbia, the federal district coextensive with the city of Washington. The city is named after George Washington, military leader of the American Revolution and the first President of the United States. Columbia in this context is an early poetic name for the United States of America, a reference to Christopher Columbus, an early European explorer of the Americas.

GREAt article. One point, though. The Potomac River is in the District of Columbia and so, by extension, are Roosevelt Island and Columbia Island. I've adjust the outline. Best regards!

Washington, DC, is NOT technically in Maryland. It is not part of any state. It is the federal district.

The District of Columbia was named after the "unofficial" goddess of the nascent U.S. If you read the collected letters of Jefferson, you will see that the founders toyed with the idea of a national goddess, finally settling on Columbia (aka Lady Liberty) who today graces the dome of the U.S. Capitol building and, until recently, most U.S. coinage (e.g., liberty dime).

It was NOT named after George Washington.

You mean it was not named after Columbus. Washington, DC was indeed named after George Washington.

I thought Washington, DC was fascinating. It was great to be where our country got its start.
