It is considered to be among the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. The city has two central districts under its administration, Şahinbey and Şehitkamil, and the metropolitan area had a population of 1,465,019. in 2014, mostly Turks, and an area of 7,642 km² (3 sq mi).
