| Octagon Tower It was once part of the New York City Asylum for the Insane -- the first municipal asylum of its kind in the country -- which opened in 1839. In 1894, it became the Metropolitan Hospital. In 1954, it was abandoned and partially demolished. The remaining structure, the Octagon Tower, suffered from fires in 1982 and 1999. The Octagon is on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. The polygon roughly outlines the former insane asylum. The Octagon luxury apartments, which opened in April 2006, now occupy this space. www.octagonnyc.com/ www.rihs.us/landmarks/octagon.htm www.undercity.org/photos/Octagon/index.htm Category: hospital landmark apartments historic asylum
