The French Renaissance château-style building was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh and opened to the public in October 1907. The Plaza was accorded landmark status by New York City's Landmark Commission in 1969. It underwent extensive renovations between 2005 and 2008 and most of the 800+ rooms were demolished and entirely new condos were built in their place. The Plaza has 282 remaining ultra-luxury hotel rooms, including 152 condo hotel units and is managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts.
