Background
Holds up to 120 male, voluntary segregated minimum and medium security prisoners.
Part of the Wellington Prison Region.
Built in 1927 to replace the Terrace Gaol in central Wellington.
Formerly known as Mount Crawford Prison.
Caters for prisoner population in the greater Wellington area.
Employment
Onsite print shop provides printing work for the Department of Corrections and private contracting work.
Prisoners also employed in a workshop, in a plastics industry.
Most employed prisoners undertake domestic duties in the prison with a smaller number maintaining buildings and working on the grounds.
Regional Initiatives
Regional Reintegration Teams were established in 2006 to provide prisoners with specialist support to help prepare them for their release into the community. The teams, consisting of Reintegration Caseworkers, Social Workers and Whanau Liaison Workers, work collaboratively with Case Officers and other Corrections’ staff to address prisoners' social, living, and reintegrative needs. Reintegration Teams are based in the five Prison Regions - South Island, Wellington, Midland, Waikato/ Central and Northern.
