Thangapuram

This house was built by Kanapathipillai Vallipuram in 1931 and named THANGAPURAM. Thangamma was his wife's name and his name Vallipuram, the two names ( first portion of THANGA mma and the last portion Valli PURAM) were combined to to form THANGAPURAM.

Vallipuram, my father, was one of the first persons to move to Colombo from Thumpalai, during the time of the British rule, and obtained employment in 1918 as a Laboratory Assistant in the Bacteriological Institute in Borella, now called Medical Research Institute.

Thangapuram was sold in 1990's. Later the buyer donated it to the nearby Nellandai Pathirakali Amman Temple and the Temple is using it as a learning centre for children.
