The samadhi of Sambhaji Angre(son of Kanoji Angre and his first wife Mathurabai)is located near the Rameshwar temple. One account states that the samadhi is of Tulaji Angre(son of Kanoji Angre and his second wife Lakshmibai) and the 'sati' stones are for the six wives who embraced the funeral pyre on his death. However,Tulaji Angre was imprisoned by the Peshwa in 1756 at Vijaydurg and kept,at first,at Raigad, then at Vandan and, finally at Sholapur(??).Tulaji died in captivity and must have been cremated at the place where he died.Hence, the Samsdhi near the temple is not likely to be his, unless his ashes were brought to Vijaydurg and his wives became 'satis',there-upon.Tulaji Angre was the'Sarkhel'(Admiral)of the Maratha Navy, with his base at Vijaydurg and his Navy
anchored in the Vaghotan-creek,protected by the guns of Vijaydurg.
Colonel Robert Clive(of the Battle of Plassey-fame)who took-over the fort,as per the deal with the Peshwa, after the Battle of Vijaydurg in 1756,found 250 cannons,6 brass-mortars and immense amount of stores and ammunition. He said,"The rock defences were so perfect that a determined garrison need not have yielded to any attack from the sea." |
