Burnett's Mound

A large hill overlooking much of Topeka. The 1966 tornado which caused major damage in Topeka, particularly to the Washburn University campus, was sighted from a weather observation lookout atop the hill, and actually passed directly over the hill. Local native legends believed that the hill protected the area from tornadoes.
