This is not the correct description for the marker found at this site. The Spanish explorer Coronado crossed from Mexico into the United States approx. 35 miles to the west of here, toward the South end of the Huachuca Mts.
The monument that is by the highway near Paul Spur is for Elisha B. Smith, a teamster with the Mormon Battalion who died on Dec.6, 1846, and who was buried nearby, approx. 60 feet North of the Mexico/U.S. Border. The Battalion camped there for two days until Smith died. Because of the rocky ground, it took one day to dig the grave before the Battalion continued on its march to California. |
