| Site of the first sustained nuclear reaction Location of the former Stagg Field west stands. In a squash court under the stands a group of scientists lead by Enrico Fermi built a "pile" (or reactor in modern terms) in which they created the first man made sustained nuclear chain reaction. 2 December 1942. A monument now sits on the site. The monument is entitled "Nuclear Energy" (1967) by Henry Moore - it is a bronze sculpture that resembles a nuclear explosion. Chicago Pile 1 [CP1] was dismantled and rebuilt at a top secret WWII site in the hills south of 95th St and Archer Ave. There it was reassembled as CP2. A granite monument now marks the location at which remnants of the reactor were buried: www.wikimapia.org/#y=41703790&x=-87910452&z=16&l=0&m=a Category: nuclear henry atomic moore fermi
