It is one of the world's largest, privately-owned nonprofit zoos, the Phoenix Zoo is totally supported by donors and private organizations. At 125 acres, the Phoenix Zoo opened in November, 1963, & was originally named the Maytag Zoo after its founder, Robert Maytag, who died six months before it opened.
