Parthenon

The Parthenon (ancient Greek: Παρθενών) is a temple of Athena, built in the 5th century BC on the acropolis of Athens. It is the most famous surviving building of ancient Greece, and has been praised as the finest achievement of Greek architecture. Its decorative sculptures are considered one of the high points of Greek art. The Parthenon is an enduring symbol of ancient Greece and of Athenian democracy, and is regarded as one of the world's greatest cultural monuments.

If you would like to see the magnificent statues from both pediments, the inner frieze, and the metopes, you need to go to London, England. They were "stolen" by Lord Elgin, and are now in the British Museum.

It was blown up by the Venetians, not the Persians. In 1687 the city, then ruled by the Ottoman Turks, was attacked by Venetian forces. The Turks stored their ammunition in the Parthenon. When it was struck by a cannonball the munitions exploded, taking a good chunk of the Parthenon with it.
