Standing regally at the head of Sheshi Skenderbeu is a huge statue of Gjergj Kastriot, also known as Skenderbeg. He led a successful rebellion against the Ottoman Empire and kept Albania free for about 25 years. In Western Europe, he has been known as the "Saviour of Christianity" since his actions effectively prevented the Ottoman Turks from launching a full-fledged invasion of Europe.
