Cantil, CA

Cantil is a small unincorporated community located in the northern Antelope Valley in Kern County in the U.S. state of California. Its zip code is 93519 and has an elevation of 2,011 feet (613 m). Cantil is near the home of the Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC), a test track used for testing new car models and motorcycles.

Cantil is also home to the Red Rock Elementary School and the Red Rock Community Day School, both of which help students who were not successful in the regular school system. Average rainfall is just 4.73 inches (12.01 cm). The highest temperature ever recorded in Cantil was 119°F (48.3°C) in 1972. The lowest temperature on record was just one degree, recorded in 1963. Pancho Barnes once lived here, having moved to Cantil after the Happy Bottom Riding Club burned to the ground under mysterious circumstances in 1953. Cantil itself was a railroad town. It was built in 1908 as the Southern Pacific Railroad was pushing their Jawbone Branch through from Mojave to meet their narrow gauge steam operations in Owenyo and carry materials for the Los Angeles Aqueduct.
