This is the former site of the Methanex methanol plant that was closed in 2005 due to the high cost of natural gas (the raw ingredient for methanol) in North America. Methanex is now providing terminalling services to EnCana at the Kitimat site and continues to use the terminal to import methanol from other Methanex production facilities to customers in the Pacific Northwest. Since 2006, EnCana has been importing petroleum condensate that is shipped by rail for use at the Athabasca Oil Sands in Alberta.
