Fort Pickens - Gulf Islands National Seashore
This is a Third-System fortification completed in 1834 to protect Pensacola Navy yard, then the primary harbor for the US Navy on the Gulf of Mexico. The fort had the distinction of never falling into Confederate hands during the Civil War, and continued federal presence here denied use of the harbor and navy yard to the rebels. The fort later housed Geronimo and members of his tribe, before being updated to hold a pair of massive 12" disappearing rifles. Several other modern gun emplacements can be seen in the vicinity, constructed from the Endicott period through WWII as the nature of naval threats changed.
Recent hurricanes have repeatedly washed out the road, and authorities are currently examining plans for more resilient access to the park. For now, visitors must hike or bike the 14-mile round-trip from the entrance gate to the Fort.
