Dordrecht was granted city rights by William I, Count of Holland, in the beginning of the thirteenth century. In 1572, representatives of all cities from Holland gathered in Dordrecht to declare their independence of Spain and acknowledge William of Orange as the leader of the fledgling Dutch state.
