Glenwood Cemetery is located at 2525 Washington Avenue, adjacent to the district on the north side of Buffalo Bayou known as the Sixth Ward. The 114-acre site of a former brick yard was opened as a cemetery park in May, 1871.
Many famous Houstonians are buried in Glenwood Cemetery, including billionaire Howard Hughes and Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas. It is also the site of the Houston Fire Fighters Memorial.
