Hardtack 1 Cactus crater / Runit Dome

In the 70's the U.S. government collected up the most radioactive debris on the island, piled it into one of the test craters and build a concrete retaining dome over it. This was originally the crater from the Hardtack 1 Cactus test on May 6, 1958.

  • Looking at this recent picture the concrete dome seems to be a lot more dilapidated than is normally shown, with vegetation growing on top of it.
