  • Wingate nefse. I go to highschool there. Good memories, good freinds and good good.....
  • The best school and sefer. The best intellectual in the country come out from Wingate.
  • I was at wingate from sept68 to may72; i woudl be gald to hear from that rugged batch coached by the headmastership of bs wilks
  • Look whom General Wingate has produced: Meles Zenawi was born on 8th May 1955 at Adwa in Northern Ethiopia. He received elementary education at Queen Sheba Junior Secondary School and completed High School in 1972 at """"""General Wingate School in Addis Ababa."""""" He then joined the Medical Faculty of Addis Ababa University where he studied for two years. Need I say more? One of the top high schools in Ethiopia and probably the best campus (too bad its old now). I wanted to goto Wingate so bad after 8th grade but I was placed Medish. I like both schools.
  • Probably the only school to building the high end intelectuals of ET. The names rain like Solomn Deressa, Gebrekiristos Desta, numerous Medical Docs,Kebede Olli as one of them, Engineers,Academia,( and Statesmen including Meles. (Legesse Pupe)and a lot of the well known cadres of the TPLF and at the for front were and are Wingaters (Fitsum, Legesse..) Four of the central comitte that I know were members of the EPRP youth league were also Wingaters. (Tito Hiruy,Dereje...) The one and only attempted assassination on Mengistu (outside of derge) was by a Wingater named Suraffel Kaba.(EPRP)Numerous Wingaters paid with their life for their fight against Fashisim..Fassil Shibeshi...(remembering the all nighter at 5 killo where he died a hero with gunns blazing. 3 people held an entire Derge force supported by Qebele and Police from Huletegna Station 2 died and one escaped)Vive the Chindit!!!
  • I agree-The pre-1974 Wingate boarding school was really the best school in the country and produced high level renowned intellectuals and leaders in many fields. As an old Wingater there is a lot I miss out of the wonderful life in Wingate. The Head boy-Prefect system, the flag parade, the prep hall, the cross country, the "Standard", the Sports Day, Wingate Scheme, Scout, the lower field recreation, the short walk after meal....The famous Misir Wot at the dining hall, the "Banna" we used to wear in the dorms..... Unfortunately, genuine wingaters whom I know closely perished by the savage Derge. These young Ethiopians sacrificed their lives for the love of their conntry and the people. They could not stand injustice and decide to fight for freedom.
  • that is where i live i love it
  • Thank you for the website. I was at General Wingate the time you mentioned and I remember you well. It was the time when Mr. Warner was the director. The discipline was great;it became part of me!! Most of my teachers were pilots of the British Air Force during the Second WW. You guys gave us also excellent academic foundation. Thank you. I went to school for a long time after Wingate and also educated my children very well,(2d and 3b). We all live in the USA. I am a grand father of three and expecting many more soon. God bless you and your family.
  • I learn at general wingate in addis ababa 1981'and I bourn in oromia ,I miss all my class Matt ,know I live in Australia i
  • I wnent to general wingate I had good time there never forget it I miss it.
  • I graduated from General Wingate school in 1989 E.C. in Electricity. During that time I had good friends like Nigatu Shoa, Besatu Ansa, Degfe, etc with whom I had passed unforgetable time.
  • lived" in Green House from 1972 till 1974. Tizetaw has already mentioned it almost all the unforgettable activities which still hover in my mind. I still smell the "nafta" which we use to clean the dorms, the anger and frustration on your way to lower field after coming late to the dining room, the silence lingering after the light went out at 22:00 in the dorms, the joy and chaos after winning a marathon race, the mischief's done in the dorms- bed knocking or putting the bed linen upwards...all the other memories like the Oromo revolt and the life of the "Tessfegno's" I think Wingate was more than a school for all wingaters...
  • I have a lot of memory in that school. I been for 3 yers, befor that I went sefere sellam high school for 8 years. for real it is not good school because wen we are 8th gread in sefere sellam high we play that area sometimes our ball fell in the school yard and if we ask the ball agin the police (or zeb) kicked as and i never forget that now wen i think that it is fun to me.
  • The memory of the days spent At the General Wingate School is still haunting my mind. Although I do wish that those days, full of pleasure, may come back, yet I know that it is a thing of the past. Time always flies on its wings. I cannot enjoy those days again. I am eager to meet old friends of my time i.e Ambelu Asfaw, Girma Abera, Sisay Hailu, Tibebu Atomsa, Abiy Getahun, Allehone Ayalew and others who joined the Addis Ababa University in 1978.
  • With regard to the information about me, above. I now have a new email address, 29a3h7c@gmail.com . Surely there must be friends, staff and students who were at Wingate while I was there, 1958-1961. Ato Negeri, school warden; Ato Mezgebe Abraha, Amharic Teacher; and all the students and staff who knew myself and my family. Don't wait too long before you write, at 88, I don't expect to be alive more than another 12 years. Good health and long life to you all, Arthur.
  • My father teached french in the early sixties, his name was Matho Voltolin; We loved living inside that school, travelling and going to Assab for hollidays. Memories and photos are still there and so much to tell about the ethiopians....1963-1968 how does it look now, IS the house we lived in still there? Maybe some day I will return though Ifeel terribly sad thinking about this . I guess I still miss Ethiopia

  • Hi Alex. Do you remember me? I so vividly remember you. My name is Yoseph Mengistu (Dr). I was a good friend of Dr Omer Ahmad (never heard from him ever since we left Wingate) and Capitain Afework Telila (I kept in touch with). Haileyesus Tsige-Tamrat lives in Germany. He is a nuclear physist. We were classmates, the class of 1973 EC. Find me on Facebook. Sorry to hear about Sertse, though. He was a very bright student. We may not be the Old Wingeters but, I'm proud to say, most of us have made our school proud by excelling in our chosen careers!
  • In 1987 ethiopian calander I graduated by electric department if any one got the 4th year gratuwstion name list pleas post it Thanks
  • My name is biruk dadi Wingate is the school I start learning mystery of life how it's going well for me. I was playing valley ball for the best things.
  • Hello Cecile I remember your father Matho Voltolin very well. My father (Martin Schwartz) also taught at Wingate (1961-1967). I clearly remember getting a drive in your father's Citreon - it was a really cool vehicle that could raise its suspension at a push of a button. I too miss Ethiopia and the Wingate compound. Paul Schwartz
  • Would like to get in touch with Paul Schwartz. How do I do this ? Jean-Pierre Yot
  • I was a teacher volunteer at Wingate in 1970/71 and also taught at Ato Asfaw's school next door. I ran the Wingate Scheme (similar to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award) for 150 students and particularly remember our weekend expeditions to Lake Langano and to Wonchi crater. Derek Bullock was the headmaster and I remember Derek Cullen and his wife, Mebrat. The school play that year was Twelfth Night, with all the parts played by boys. Malvolio was the star of the show. I am now 63 and will be returning to Ethiopia this Christmas for the first time since 1971. It would be amazing to meet up with anyone who remembers me. Laurie Prowse
  • ohh I was there at that time too.
  • Paul, your Daddy, Martin Schwartz taught chemistry and I was one of his students. He was an outstanding teach, who put a lot of his time to help us succeed. After I joined Addis Ababa University, we worshiped at the Baptist Evangelical Church located in Arat Kilo and that was 52 years ago and I remember you too. I live in the USA with my wife and children and grand children. General Wingate High School was a great place for studies in humanities and sciences. The two prime ministers of Ethiopia, Tesfaye Dinqa and Meles Zenawi were products of the School. Another alumni, the prolific great writer Be'alu Girma, and the great scholar Haile Fida were victim of the 1974 Socialist Revolution of Ethiopia. Great School produced great souls. The communist revolutionaries converted the School to carpentry and masonry workshop --Misuse of resources!
  • Cecile, yes he did. I remember you very well. He was also our house master so I sometimes came to your house if there was something important. I teased you sometimes with 'Cecile, tu es belle et gentile.' after having heard it on a French course sent on tv. Your father was an extremely gente person.
